What God Tells Me About Humility

Reflection

When I first learned that my son had been given another detention, my heart filled with rage. It felt unfair, especially knowing the suspension he had received before also didn’t sit right with me. My instinct was to go in guns blazing, to prove the system wrong.

But before I walked through those doors, I stopped. I sat with God, meditated on His Word, and refreshed myself with my mantra: “I am with the Lord, and the Lord is with me.” That statement carries weight—because anything I do after declaring it must be in line with God’s grace. If I step outside of that, I disgrace myself and Him.

So I entered with gratitude. I thanked the staff for the work they do, for the environment they provide, for the safety and faith foundation this school gives my children. That set the tone. Then I asked questions, not accusations: “Help me understand what’s going on here. Help me understand what being rude meant. Help me understand why my son was marked for talking when he says it was allowed.”

I learned things I hadn’t known—like the phone use in class, which disappointed me, and how sometimes his tone comes across as disrespectful even when he doesn’t mean it . I admitted those things needed correction. I also pressed for fairness—why a shirt coming untucked or speaking out in study hall should be weighed the same as more serious actions.

By the end, I didn’t storm out with anger. Instead, I left with understanding, boundaries, and a plan to talk further with my son about responsibility. My rage had transformed into humility.

Scripture

  • “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.”Matthew 23:23

  • “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”Micah 6:8

  • “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”James 4:6

Leadership Principle

Humility in leadership is action in process. It is walking into conflict with gratitude, asking questions before making accusations, and seeking understanding even when you feel justified in your anger. A humble leader does not compromise on justice but pursues it with mercy and faithfulness, refusing to let pride or rage dictate the outcome.

Prayer

"Lord, thank You for holding me back from my anger today. Thank You for reminding me of my mantra—that I am with You, and You are with me. Help me always to remember that if I walk outside of Your grace, I dishonor You. Teach me to lead with humility, to advocate with justice, and to discipline with love. Amen."

A Father’s Blessing

My son, today we both learned a lesson. I wanted to fight for you with anger, but God showed me to fight with humility instead. May you never mistake rage for strength, or pride for leadership. True strength is found in walking humbly with God—standing for justice, showing mercy, and staying faithful to His ways. If you remember this, you will never walk alone.
